Description:
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary imaging team, the Supervisor - Ultrasound , under the direction of the Manager - Imaging Services, oversees the operational activities pertaining to the relevant ultrasound imaging service or program to ensure delivery of a high quality Diagnostic imaging service. The ultrasound imaging service provides inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and interventional ultrasound procedures on pediatric and adult patients including OB patients on a referral basis and medical research. The Supervisor - Ultrasound deputizes for the Manager - Imaging Services as required. S/he supervises the technologists and students within the service to ensure the continuity of service delivery. S/he through the production of high quality images, is responsible to ensure a high standard of service is continually provided to all patients, parents and other hospital staff as prescribed in the patient care and facility standards.
KEY ROLE & ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Assesses ultrasound requests for clinical appropriateness in accordance with the departmental policies and procedures and makes decisions regarding correct imaging technique to ensure high quality diagnostic images.
- Schedules, supervises, delegates and oversees ultrasound service resources at a designated section of the ultrasound service.
- Performs and provides an efficient and effective ultrasound imaging service for the department of Diagnostic Imaging.
- Leads a designated section/program of the ultrasound service. Ensures areas/programs under direct management are safely delivered with optimal utilization of equipment and personnel.
- Assesses processes within the designated section and makes recommendations to the Manager - Imaging Services for possible improvements and amendments.
- Supervises Ultrasound Technologists and students within the designated ultrasound section for the duration of the shift. Identifies resources requirements and informs Manager - Imaging Services accordingly.
Clinical
- Plans, prioritizes and organizes a range of highly complex activities and projects for a designated section or program of the ultrasound service.
- Interprets highly complex clinical information and acts independently in the assessment of referrals for ultrasound examinations to ensure appropriate studies are performed.
- Works independently, performs all routine and specialized ultrasound procedures, and associated responsibilities, as dictated by the workload in the rostered area.
- Utilizes skills to assess a patient’s condition, often acute, and decides on an appropriate method to obtain a diagnostic image from a range of options in consultation with the supervising radiologist, ensuring the necessary patient care is provided to patients of all ages.
- Ensures evidence-based standards of practice with ultrasound imaging are applied to the examination being performed.
- Presents and receives highly complex technical, scientific and clinical information.
- Participates in standby and on call roster systems for the Diagnostic Imaging Service, in imaging areas appropriate to training and qualifications, as designated by senior staff.
- Monitors and maintains stock levels for consumables relative to the service.
- Provides support and relief for department managers as required.
Quality
- Ensures that systems and standards that promote patient safety and safe practices for delivering patient care for the modality are adhered to as directed.
- Provides modality expertise in reference to the Ultrasound service, assists in the maintenance and development of the ultrasound service.
- Adheres to departmental and applicable organizational policies, procedures, regulations relevant to the ultrasound patient care team. Maintains accurate and concise records of all imaging received by the patient using the appropriate systems.
- Maintains a high level of expertise and supervises faults/issues effectively to guarantee the safe operations of the ultrasound equipment, ensuring an efficient flow and optimal utilization of resources.
- Implements directed change to effect continual improvement in services provided, and ensures compliance with all internal and external standards as well as regulatory and legal requirements.
- Develops, contributes, participates and complies with quality improvement programs and competency assessment initiatives for the Diagnostic Imaging Services.
- Provides appraisals of staff as directed. Participates in mandatory training and actively practices continual professional development in alignment with professional development programs to ensure maintenance of professional licensure/accreditation.
- Adheres to and promotes compliance with the hospital’s radiation safety and protection policies and associated codes of practice and takes appropriate action where non-compliance is evident.

Training and Development
- Develops, contributes, implements and delivers training and development programs on equipment and procedures in the area of operations, in alignment with the facilities training objectives and plans.
- Provides leadership to diagnostic imaging staff. Advises other clinical and students during ultrasound procedures as required.
Communication
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility and maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Attends divisional meetings and other meetings as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Imaging or equivalent
- Post graduate in ultrasound is required if base degree is not within the ultrasound field
Experience:
5+ years clinical experience including 2+ years of supervisory experience in Ultrasound imaging
Certification and Licensure:
- Eligible for registration with the ARRT/ARDMS/HCPC or an equivalent licensing/accreditation board as an Ultrasound technologist
- Eligible for licensure as a Ultrasound technologist in the State of Qatar
